What is a Graded Card

What type of variances can be seen in original PSA slabs?
1. "Newton Rings" (The Rainbow Effect)
This is the most common issue. It looks like an oily, rainbow-colored circular stain on the surface of the plastic.
- What it is: Not a liquid or a stain, but an optical phenomenon called "interference." It happens when two pieces of plastic (the inner sleeve and the outer case) touch each other perfectly with no air in between.
- Key Note: This is not damage and is very common in PSA's current slab generation.
2. "Flow Lines" or Hairline Scuffs
During the plastic injection molding process, tiny "flow lines" can appear. These look like very faint, straight hairline scratches or swirls inside the plastic itself.
- What it is: The cooling process of the molten plastic.
- How to tell: If you run your fingernail over the "scratch" and don't feel anything, it’s a flow line inside the plastic, not a surface scratch.
3. Sonic Weld Marks (The "White Dots")
PSA uses ultrasonic welding to seal the two halves of the case. Sometimes, this high-frequency vibration causes tiny white specks or "frosting" at the seam or near the corners.
Crucial Distinction: Small, isolated white specks are normal factory artifacts. Large, thick patches of white frosting along the edges are a red flag for tampering (where someone tried to pry the slab open).
